Your first step is awareness.
1. The Senior Fitness Test is a functional fitness test for independently living adults > 60 yrs old that assess specific characteristics needed for function mobility, including muscle strength, aerobic endurance, flexibility, agility and balance and body mass index (height and weight).
2. The STEADI, stopping elderly accidents, deaths and injuries, is the toolkit from the CDC for fall prevention screening. It includes a questionnaire risk assessment and a few evidence based functional assessments.
3. Ankle Brachial Index (ABI), is an easy but often overlooked screening tool for peripheral artery obstruction. After 5 to 10 minutes of resting, blood pressure measurements are taken on both arms. Then a handheld doppler and cuff is used to calculate the pressures of both legs. The ABI is calculated and the value compared to normative data.
